Gal Gadot starrer Wonder Woman 1984 director Patty Jenkins has ruled out to a major fan theory and it’s bad news for anyone who was keen on the idea of Wonder Woman getting together with Cheetah.
Speaking to SFX for its latest issue, Jenkins revealed that although some fans have speculated that Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) and her new friend Barbara Minerva (Kristen Wiig) might have a romantic spark, that idea is not visited in the DCfilm.
But that doesn’t mean that Jenkins didn’t think about it.
“It might have [happened] in a different storyline,” she said. “But because this storyline was so clearly about Steve (Trevor, played by Chris Pine) coming back, the whole story was about Steve. It’s all a love story with Steve. There wasn’t room for two for Diana.”
With one scene in the trailer showing Diana and Barbara out for drinks together, some fans had hoped that the pair might be on a date. Although that isn’t the case in the film, star Gadot joked that “the sexual tension is always there, I can tell you that!”.
We got our first proper glimpse at Cheetah earlier this month in a photo that showed her and Diana having a showdown in the White House, with Cheetah countering Wonder Woman’s golden lasso with her own wrist gauntlets.
Wonder Woman 1984 sees a time jump from the first movie with Diana now living in 1984 and making friends with archaeologist Barbara, although their friendship turns to conflict when Barbara undergoes a transformation to become Cheetah.
Diana must also contend with unscrupulous media mogul Maxwell Lord (Pedro Pascal) as well as deal with the mysterious reappearance of her love interest Steve, who seemingly died during the first Wonder Woman movie in 2017 – although Jenkins has promised that his return in this film makes “perfect sense”.
