Bollywood actress Twinkle Khanna, who has made her debut with Barsaat in 1995, starred in many films before leaving showbiz behind and becoming an author. Recently, she recalled an incident where her film’s director asked her if she would ‘do a Mandakini’ during a rain song sequence. Mandakini garnered instant fame after she danced under a waterfall in a white saree in her debut film, Ram Teri Ganga Maili. It was directed by Raj Kapoor.
Twinkle Khanna knows how to keep things straight and is always ready with her wit. In a conversation with Waheeda Rehman for Tweak India, Twinkle recalled the time she was asked to recreate Mandakini’s famous waterfall scene during a rain song sequence. Her response angered the director to a point where he refused to speak to her. Naturally, they never worked together again.
Recalling the conversation, Twinkle said, “I was wearing a white kurta, and ready for the quintessential rain song, and the director comes with a shawl wrapped around, imitating Guru Dutt. And he says, ‘If I tell you to do a Mandakini, what will you say?’ I said I will say two things. First, I will say ‘no’, and secondly, ‘You’re not Raj Kapoor’. He never spoke to me, he never repeated me, and it was horrible.”
