Hollywood legend Robert De Niro and Stars Wars’ John Boyega are coming together for the upcoming Netflix thriller, The Formula.
Gerard McMurray, the man who helmed titles like Burning Sands and The First Purge, is set to produce, write and direct the movie, which is said to be based on an original idea. However, parallels are already being drawn between the Robert De Niro-starrer and director Nicolas Winding Refn’s acclaimed 2011 feature, Drive.
The director took to his Instagram to inform the fans of the veteran superstar of their upcoming collaboration. He wrote, “Feels AMAZING to see this idea in my head finally come to life that I’m writing, directing, and producing. My new production company Buppie Productions is teaming up with Tribeca Films & Netflix to bring to you a dope original film coming soon called THE FORMULA starring two of my favorite actors John Boyega and Robert De Niro (sic).”
Talking about the storyline of the film, McMurray added, “It’s the story of a young man from #Detroit who becomes an international racing star in the world of Formula One under the tutelage of his mentor with old mob ties (sic).”
The plot of The Formula will follow a Formula One racing prodigy who is coerced into becoming a getaway driver to save the only family he has left. The film may also have shades of crime as De Niro’s career has been trademarked by the genre.
Robert De Niro, on the other hand, who is also said to be co-producing The Formula along with Jane Rosenthal and Berry Welsh, returns to Netflix following his much-appreciated work in acclaimed director Martin Scorsese’s classic crime saga, The Irishman, in which he was seen sharing the screen space with Hollywood legends, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci.
