Well, it was the goofy moment for many directors all around the world, when a women director from Iran has own Oscar for his short film for directing an Indian film about women menstruation In India. “Period. End of Sentence”, is the 26 minutes short movie directed by the Iran based women director Rayka Zehtabchi the deals with the menstrual taboos for the young girls and women who faces social issues and how they tackles the situation.
After receiving the Oscar award for the 26 minute running short film, the director of the movie Rayka Zehtabchi said as “I can’t believe a movie about menstruation just won an Oscar!” In fact, she can’t control her tears after receiving the Oscar for the best documentary.
On the other hand, the producer of the movie Melissa Berton has said as “A period should end a sentence, not a girl’s education”
About the movie “Period. End of Sentence”
It is a documentary movie that fully focuses over the menstrual issues faced by the village girls and women in the rural parts of the nation, particularly on the rural village located outside of the nation’s capital Delhi.
The documentary clearly pictures the stigma facing by the school going young girls, especially the school drop outs of girl students on behalf of the menstrual issues. Also, the women during their menstrual time are forbidden to enter into the spiritual places especially inside the worshipping temples.
While responding to the question raised by the reporters at the end of the academy awards ceremony, the director of the movie Zehtabchi said as “We surveyed hundreds of women and men [in India] and some of the responses that we would hear about what menstruation is that really took us aback were women who had been menstruating their entire lives and literally couldn’t tell us what a period was!”
Also she added “They didn’t know or understand why they would menstruate each month. In fact, they had gone their entire lives believing that they had an illness”. Ever since, the documentary has nominated for the Academy awards, the teams started to receive a lot of request letter on installing sanitary pad machines in different communities across the world under the project “The Pad Project” with the help of the NGO.
During the press conference, the producer of the documentary Berton has conveyed as “We received over 2,500 emails from all over the world saying we’d love a pad machine in this community and that community. It’s really wonderful, and now we have to do the work of the nonprofit,”
