Heavy snow blanketed parts of Spain due to the storm Filomena, that has put the country on red alert. According to BBC, interior minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska said that this was the most intense snowstorm that Spain has seen in the last fifty years (since 1971). Because of the snowstorm, road, rail and air travel, were left disrupted. Up to 20 inches of snow fell on the capital Madrid.
Photos and videos of a snow-covered Madrid made it to social media websites. Several videos showing people enjoying the snow, innovatively skiing on snow-covered roads and few other showing how life has been disrupted were posted on Twitter.
A Twitter user, Jaded New Yorker shared a video of a man enjoying a sleigh ride on the roads of Madrid with the caption, “I interrupt your doomscroll to let you know it hasn’t been snow covered like this in 61 years in Madrid, Spain. People are into it so I’m going to share some videos. This guy has been waiting for this his entire life (sic).”

The temperatures plunged to -8 degree Celsius in parts of Spain because of the storm. To ensure that the major roads were cleared, soldiers were deployed by the authorities. By Sunday, Madrid’s international airport commenced its operations, after cancelling all flights on Friday.
