COVID-19 cases in India on Monday inched closer to the 5.50 lakh mark as over 19,000 fresh cases were reported on Sunday. India has reported its highest-ever single-day spike of 19,459 coronavirus cases.
The coronavirus cases tally in India now stands at 548,318. This is the sixth consecutive day that coronavirus infections have increased by more than 15,000.
In the past 24 hours, 380 people have died due to coronavirus. The total number of deaths in the country now stands at 16,475.
Of the coronavirus caseload in India, 210,120 are positive cases, while 321,723 have cured, according to the latest data released by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare.

On Sunday, a record single-day surge of 19,906 coronavirus cases pushed India’s tally to 528,859, while the death toll rose to 16,095 with 410 persons succumbing to the infection in the last 24 hours, according to the Union Health Ministry data.
- India is now just behind the United States, Brazil, and Russia in terms of the total confirmed cases. It is, therefore, the biggest epicenter of the coronavirus disease pandemic in Asia and the fourth worst-affected nation in the world.
- Maharashtra is the most affected state, followed by Delhi and Tamil Nadu. Delhi has crossed Mumbai in terms of the number of coronavirus cases.
- The global COVID-19 case total has surged past 9.8 million after a single-day record of 189,077 cases were registered worldwide over the past 24 hours, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said on Sunday (local time).
- The central government keeps denying that community transmission is taking place in India.
