The top three apps in the one billion user list are owned by the Facebook Company. The others in the list include Google owned Youtube, Gmail and Google Maps. And the other one in this list is a Chinese chat app called WeChat.

In the year 2014, Facebook made Messenger an individual app and asked people to download and sign in for the app separately. Even a person who did not have a Facebook account, could sign up for Messenger. And since then this mobile app has grown enough to now become an important part of Facebook business.

More than 17 billion photos and 22 million GIFs are sent via Messenger every month. Also the app has been downloaded more than 1 billion times on Android. This shows the popularity of the Messenger app.

Messenger’s Chief showed his excitement over the success and said that the 1 billion user mark is not easy to achieve and at the same time it is a significant achievement for the company. According to him, it is an extraordinary experience to serve over 1 billion people and they are proud to do so. And may be now the company will try and figure out Messenger’s commercial potential.
